That’s right…me, a guy that’s used PCs for the last 20 years is seriously in love with a MacBook Pro. I mean, I have had a Mac Mini for almost a year but seldom even turn it on. However, it’s totally different with my MacBook Pro. I tried it out this weekend at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival and I swear my workflow in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom is far faster than with any PC laptop I’ve used in the past few years. That and everything just seems to work better. Booting is lightning fast and shutdown is almost instantaneous. There are always a few things wrong with every PC laptop that every owner gets used to through use. My previous laptop wouldn’t pick up any wireless signals unless I turned the adapter off and then on again but there haven’t been any little things like that with my MacBook.
I’ve always thought Macs were more style than function and to a certain extent, they are but hey, style is important. They’re still a bit too expensive (especially the ludicrous MacBook Air) but some things just work so much better. Mac OS X works great and I’ve yet to see any sort of crash, even when I run several programs at the same time. I also couldn’t believe that installing and uninstalling programs only involved moving them to the application folder or to the trash. That’s absurd! You mean there’s no lengthy uninstall process that leaves a billion orphaned .dll files everywhere?!
I’ve never owned a single laptop with a 15.4″ screen…or even a 15″ screen. All mine have been 13.3″ and smaller, including my old Sony with a 10.4″ screen that I loved since it was tiny enough to bring in my backpack as I trekked through Europe. My thought was that laptops are meant to be carried and should be as portable as possible. I wouldn’t want to lug around a 17″ laptop all day. However, the MBP is just over 5 pounds and an inch thick…which is really good considering it has a fast Penryn-based Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM (soon to be 4GB) and a GeForce 8600 in it. Those are some impressive specs and it’s only a pound heavier than my previous laptop.
I haven’t found anything I can’t do that I would be able to on a PC laptop yet. I’m sure if I were still playing games more, I would want a PC laptop but in truth, I haven’t really played too many games on my PC lately anyways since I bought an Xbox 360 and a Playstation 3…which is really ridiculous considering how much high-end gaming hardware I’m running on my desktop…and two 24″ LCDs.
My only complaint would probably be about the size. 15.4″ is still a bit too big to carry around like I would if I were lugging it through Europe again. If someone made a 13.3″ MacBook Pro with all the same specs except for the screen size, I’d be all over that.
Anyways, I’m a Mac noob so if anyone has suggestions for software and tips, please let me know. I’m sure some of you are much more knowledgeable on the subject than I.

I contemplated getting a MBP too but can’t justify the cost considering I can get a better specced (but not as nice) Thinkpad for much less.

ReplyThat is great news! I want to get a mac, but budget sets me short. I don’t like to use out of pocket money. Only money from the site will go back into rotation. Penny pinching the most! I may have to settle for a vista ultimate laptop for under 1 grand.

ReplyI don’t think I’ve burned a CD/DVD in the longest time. External HDs and flash keys are so much more convenient.

ReplyWelcome to the group Ed, I just received my first Mac the other day - although I went with the standard MacBook. Loving it so far, although it is taking a little getting used to but better today after installing a mouse.
