Top Gear Finally Coming in HD

by Ed Lau on September 24, 2009

Other than being a hilariously entertaining show about cars, Top Gear has some of the best camera work on television. The way the show is produced is amazingly well done with top-notch cinematography…and in the upcoming season (we assume it will start in November) will finally join the rest of the world in high definition!

There have been several episodes in HD already such as the Polar Special from a couple years ago but for the most part, our favorite BBC2 show has been stuck in standard definition. However, the first question that sprung to my mind is…how on earth are those of us not in England going to get it since the majority of us outside of the UK get Top Gear via downloading episodes from online sources such as FinalGear.com. They’ve already said that they will be releasing episodes in 720p and 1080p but I can’t imagine how long that 1080p download is going to be considering that an hour long episode at standard definition is a 700MB video file. Probably three or four times the size? The delay and anticipation would kill me!

BBC HD broadcasts only in 1080i, not 720p or 1080p, so there’s a typo going on somewhere.

Expect scene releases to be 720p regardless, and they will be about 1.3 GB in size for a 40 minute episode, and 2.6 GB for an 80 minute. I can’t recall right now exactly how long the Top Gear shows are, so you can work tha to ut.

The scene won’t release 1080i, so you will have to hope someone will release a direct stream cap somewhere (a group called ALANiS does it for a lot of shows, on Usenet they are about 4GB for a 40 minute episode episode). But a 720p MKV rip is usually totally adequate.

I have never heard of this show. I think I will go check it out!

HD is nice but it takes a lot longer to download or stream.

Luckily, Comcast provides episodes of Top Gear On-Demand – hopefully, that will include the HD versions soon!
