Trying Out TweetDeck

by Ed Lau on February 20, 2009

Lately, I’ve been seeing some strange bugs with Twirl. For some reason, when I receive an update, the pop-up indicator just stays there until I actually go to close it instead of just disappearing on its own after a little while.

As such, I decided to give TweetDeck a try. Right away I like the color scheme a lot better. I was never a big fan of how twirl looked like came out of a Nerf gun factory. TweetDeck, in comparison, looks clean and modern. That in itself is probably enough for me to keep it and scrap twirl from my MacBook Pro’s dock. Yes, I am aware I can probably change twirl’s colors but I really shouldn’t have to bother.

As for the actual use and function of the programs, twirl is probably more simple to use right off the bat. Single column with buttons indicating whether you’re looking at friend’s tweets, replies or direct messages. In comparison, TweetDeck is configurable to use multiple columns. I’m not sure I’m a fan of this but I think I could get used to it. I also noticed that TweetDeck has a slightly smaller memory footprint, although that really isn’t an issue since I have 4GB of RAM on my MBP.

What Twitter clients do you folks use and how do you like them? I’ll give TweetDeck a go for awhile before really deciding which one I want to use on a regular basis (although I’m sure I do the majority of my Tweeting from my iPhone via TwitterFon) and I’ll report back if I have any real issues with it.

I gave up on TweetDeck right away when I first used it, but after going back to it I now use it as my main Twitter app. I still have Twhirl for my other Twitter accounts (it has multi-account support). By the way, Twhirl comes with a ton of color schemes, including one that looks a lot like TweetDeck.
