Vancouver Cops Have No Team Spirit

Posted on April 17th, 2007 by Ed Lau

Tonight was another fantastic team game by the Canucks and another win over the Dallas Stars by a final score of 2-1. I thought it was great that the greatest Canuck of all time, Trevor Linden, potted the winning goal. Seriously, the man is a hero in this town. Unfortunately, I had an English exam so I missed most of the game. Either way, congrats, boys…keep up the good work.

Linden: “I’m playing like a long time ago! A real long time ago! Feel me! I’m playing like I did a long time ago! This was the dopest goal I ever scored…since ninety-fo!”

On my drive home, I’m sure plenty of people thought I was an idiot, waving my Canucks flag out my window and honking at anyone that would hear it. But hey, that’s the nature of sports fans…we’re all a little bit stupid. Stupid but I’m damned proud to act like a moron for my team. There are very few things I wouldn’t do for the Canucks…you don’t want to know how far I’d go. :D I was almost home when I received a call from a friend, telling me he was downtown and doing much the same thing I was doing. Unfortunately for him, he got a $86 dollar ticket for it.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The police were actually giving out tickets to people honking their horns in celebration of the Canucks win, which is pretty much the only thing that actually matters on game day. I was absolutely amazed. They cited illegal noise and disturbing the peace but…who the hell is asleep at 8:30pm!? Who lives on that part of Robson Street other than the four or five hobos? If you ask me, this city needs a little peace disturbing…I mean, everything closes too damned early in Vancouver.

Vancouver isn’t exactly over run with crime but I’m 90% sure that the cops should have something better to do than give Canucks fans tickets for celebrating their team’s win, especially at such an important and emotional time as the playoffs. How about you guys go catch some real criminals, huh?

And don’t think I’m much of a N.W.A F**k Tha Police sort of guy. I’m straight outta…well, Richmond and I take pride in supporting our law enforcement (when they’re not being stupid) and have worked in the past with the police department at REVscene events. I have friends who are cops and think most of them do a very good job. However, whoever is downtown giving tickets to Canucks fans is just an idiot.

I don’t want to jinx anything but if the Canucks…y’know, win “that thing”, I’m going to be down on “that street” celebrating and making as much noise as possible. I will bring megaphones and fireworks and a full marching band if I can and I’m sure thousands of others will be there too. If any idiot cop wants to give me a ticket then, be sure that I’m going to throw it back in their faces. It is a disgrace to our city that the police are giving tickets to people celebrating one of the only things that unites our city. During the playoffs, there is absolutely nothing more important in Vancouver than the Canucks. How dare you try to dampen our moments of glory as fans?

Keep waving your towels and honking your horns, Vancouver. Don’t let the po-po stop you from supporting our team.

You guys both deserve tickets, IMHO… For overreacting! Come on, they are up in the series 3-1 but haven’t exactly won the cup yet. It’s just the first series, not something to get excited about.

When they start winning in June, then you can feel free to go insane ;)

There are plenty of people on…that street…celebrating every win and the cops are handing out tickets! That’s just un-Canadian!

My favorite all time memory is during the riots of ‘94…Don Taylor on the roof a building on Robson St reporting live for Sports Page…only to have to cut it short because of the tear gas!

That sucks for your friend. The cops here in Calgary are very easy going and let people party. The partying didn’t start until yesterday when we finally won against Detroit though ;)
