“w00t” Is Apparently Now A Word…

Posted on December 13th, 2007 by Ed Lau

It’s the sort of thing that makes you smack your face in disbelief. Yesterday, “w00t” officially became a word in the English language, recognized in the Webster’s dictionary. I’m seriously not sure how something like this happens, especially since it’s spelled with a couple of zeros rather than “o”. This is surely a sign that the world is coming to an end.

Personally, I believe proper spelling is important, especially in a professional environment but also in a casual setting. Heck, I constantly tell John Chow when he spells incorrectly (which is quite often…). I honestly can’t stand reading sentences th4t 4r3 sp3llz3d lyk3 d1s, which pissed me off to no end during the early days of instant messaging and on websites like the now defunct AsianAvenue and free blog host Xanga. The most common excuse is that since it’s the internet, there’s no need to spell correctly…which makes no sense.

However, the introduction of a “word” like w00t into the English language is quite important in that internet culture is becoming more and more integrated into the mainstream. How long before we see other common internet words incorporated into everyday life?

The day my doctor tells me that this prescription will totally “pwnz0r” my cold or my professor answers my question with “YA RLY!”…
