What Top Gun Was Actually About

Posted on October 16th, 2007 by Ed Lau

Top Gun, Maverick, Iceman, Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer

The other day, a co-worker put Top Gun on one of our store’s display computers. Another one of our co-workers comes in and asks us “Awesome…Top Gun! You guys ever seen this movie?” and we just look at him like he has three heads.

“Dude, it’s freakin’ Top Gun. What the hell do you think?”

We proceed to watch for about half an hour, ignoring these people who come in wanting to buy stuff. I think they’re called customers. Then someone said to us “Y’know, I think Top Gun was ahead of its time.” to which I say…

“Well, yeah…it’s the first movie to have such prominent homosexual lead roles. It was the Brokeback Mountain of it’s time.”

Everyone proceeds to look at me like I’m crazy. This is the exact ensuing conversation.

“Dude, are you kidding me?! It’s about fighter pilots! And it has Kelly McGillis, who was pretty hot!”

“Yeah, but there’s all this stuff about riding each other’s tails and wingmans. Not to mention every ten seconds, there’s some sort of sweaty, naked dude action and greased up volleyball…although I thought they would have more fashion sense. Who the hell wears jeans to the beach? It’s all about Tom Cruise’s struggle with his sexuality…well, Maverick’s too, I guess.”

“But Maverick gets with Kelly McGillis too!”

“Yeah but he leaves her place before they do it. I mean, what the hell?”

Then, today…a friend sends me this. Looks like I’m not the only one that thought this was what Top Gun was intended as. Be forewarned. Tarantino’s language is rather…well, you get the idea.

If Tarantino said it, it’s probably at least somewhat true.

Negative. Top Gear makes overt sexual comments…nothing implicit there.
