Apple estimated that 10 million people, or 1% of the market share, will purchase an iPhone. Will you be one of them?
Honestly, I’ve been thinking about it for a few days now since just recently, I’ve been offered one. I can easily buy one on the June 11th release date but hey, I like having stuff before anyone else. Obviously I’ll need a debadged and unlocked model with no contract so I’m looking at about $1000-1300 (Canadian funds), depending on which version I get.
I have a few concerns with the iPhone. Mainly, it’s about reception and voice quality. This is Apple’s first foray into the mobile phone market and while they’ve made some great products on their first try, I can’t be entirely sure the voice quality and reception will be top notch for the price. If it’s going to cost a grand, it damn well better sound like it.
I’m also concerned about the data costs. GPRS data still costs a lot here in Canada with 1MB of service going for about $12 and 200MB for $100. With all the online applications that the iPhone is used for, I’m sure it will quite expensive each month to fully utilize all the options. Otherwise, you’re just blowing a grand on a mobile phone and a widescreen iPod. I’m also not sure if anyone in Canada supports the iPhone’s features but now that Cingular is owned by AT&T, which I think also controls Rogers in Canada, there’s a beter chance of that happening.
It’s funny…after I was one of the first to own a Sony Ericsson P800 (which was a great PDA phone…one of the first with a stylus and such), I swore I’d never spend $1000 on a phone ever again, usually limiting myself to $500 but the iPhone is just damned cool and quite tempting. That and I’m getting quite bored with my Samsung as great a phone as it is. There are also rumors of an iPhone Nano and I’m sure the rumored Google phone will be interesting too.
I suppose I could sell my Nano and my 30GB Video and it would account for about half the price tag…

which samsung are you using right now? there’s no “unlimited” data plans there? (ulimited as up to 5gb a month here).
iphone nano? interesting….

ReplyA grand for a cellphone?! That’s a bit too much I would say. That could be one month of a mortgage payment!
Like you said, GPRS data packages in Canada rape you senseless…it wouldn’t be worth it.
ReplyI would probably get one if I didn’t already have a very capable Treo 700p. It does everything I need and more. That, and I don’t want to change service providers again.

I am all in for the iPhone. I think by the time that it comes to Canada though it will look and be completely different. Anything buzzing around yet about the release up here in the North?

ReplyThat’s largely a matter of personal preference, because both the Palm OS and Windows Mobile have pretty good support in terms of third party applications.

ReplyI’ve just had my first iPhone experience at the Mac store in Seattle…and I’m totally in love with it. Someone please figure out how to get the data services to work at a reasonable rate in Canada!
