I came across this post yesterday on Ms. Danielle’s blog in regard to weird foods that people enjoy. She mentions broccoli with ketchup and ranch dressing on rice (no, you read that correctly), which I’ll never understand. Danielle personally enjoys broccoli with soy sauce and mayo but I don’t particularly find that all that gross really. As long as it’s not in huge dollops, mayonnaise is okay with just about any veggie.
I struggled to find my own “yum” that might seem disgusting to the average person. While I do like chicken feet at Dot Com Dim Sum, it’s not one of my favorite foods. It’s not like I’d go ballistic if a place didn’t serve it. I also like sea urchin and octopus at sushi restaurants but I could do without it if I had to. For the most part, most of the things I seriously enjoy are rather pedestrian and…well, regular.
Except for one. I couldn’t believe I didn’t think of it before but I like this stuff so much that if most of my friends had to associate me with one particular unique food, it would be this.

Today, I went for lunch with John and Sarah Chow in Richmond at Kam Do, the same place I interviewed John near the beginning of this blog. Usually when I go to Kam Do, I order this particular dish…Baked Ox Tongue on Spaghetti. Yep, ox tongue. Sorry, we all forgot our cameras today so I had to use my phone. For those of you unfamiliar with this dish, it’s basically like a steak or a pork chop on spaghetti but instead of the steak or pork chop, it’s about 6 slices of ox tongue sliced about a half-inch thick and baked with some cheese and tomato sauce.
John, who accepted a challenge from a reader to live off minimum wage for a week apparently, ordered a much more conventional pork chop with macaroni.

Ox tongue is a very tender cut of beef that’s got a little bit of bounce when you chew it. It has to be cleaned well and cut into relatively thin slices. Sarah tried some and commented that “It’s good…I would like it if I didn’t know it was tongue.” Kam Do usually makes one of the better ox tongue dishes although a local food court nearby has a stand that makes very good curry ox tongue too.
I know some of you may be grossed out with this dish but I encourage you to give it a try at a place that makes it well. I’m guessing that most would react the same way and like it if I didn’t tell them what it was but personally, I think any food is worth trying at least once. Well, except any form of animal genitalia. That’s where I draw the line…

I don’t even know what’s considered ‘weird’ anymore… But one thing that I truly LOVE that might sound weird is goose intestines. For hot pot, they have an amazing texture.. sort of crunchy, sort of bouncy. And the intestine is connected with fatty tissue that tasted delicious when cooked. So yeah, that’d be it probably.
Ox tongue is also excellent with hot pot

Replyi haven’t been able to eat tongue yet…ever. they serve lengua at the mexican place i go to all the time but there’s something about eating something that tastes me back that makes me a little nauseous. foods with funny textures weird me out too — tongue, tripe, liver, mushrooms (unless on pizza). i would definitely not interfere with you and your ox tongue
and yes broccoli and ketchup did sound gross
ReplyMy boyfriend thinks it’s weird that I eat pancakes with no syrup and fries with no ketchup.
ReplyI love marinated duck tongue. When I was a kid my mom would buy a big bag full and we’d munch on them while watching movies on our state-of-the-art VHS player.
