You Call That Rain? THIS Is Rain!

by Ed Lau on June 17, 2008

Living in Vancouver, I thought I had seen it all in terms of wet weather. I mean, we get rain all year round and it can get pretty bad. However, I didn’t realize it was freakin’ monsoon season in Taipei. It was like being under a waterfall. A boiling hot waterfall. Unlike everywhere else in the world, probably, the rain in Taipei is actually hot so walking around in it during 35 degree weather with 100% humidity makes you even hotter than when it’s dry so don’t think you can cool off in the rain. It’s a really good idea to carry around an umbrella…a tough lesson I learned early after getting soaked to the skin whilst making fun of Michael Kwan for his Mary Poppins-esque umbrella (yes, he looked ridiculous…but dry).

(watch in high quality to really see the sheer amount of rainfall…)

It’s been like that on and off for days here in HK… Roads are all flooded in China too… It’s been nice though, because it keeps the temperature down a couple degrees :)

The difference between this and Vancouver is that here it rains 2 months a year and in Vancouver stops raining for 2 months a year :)

Looks like fun. I like warm rain.

Yes it does rain out in Vancouver a lot, but it’s also boiling in the summer here. Though the weather has not been that good this year.

We just set an all time June record here for rain. That was set back by the 11th. Just a bit away from here, there was so much rain a lake overflowed and completely washed out into a river taking some houses with it.

It’s typical for Taiwan. Remember it is a tropical island so tropical storms are expected. Most rainfall in Taiwan occurs in 10 minute spurts.
